From whence we've come

I am posting this photo along with this entry because it helps me with perspective. These two wonderful friends came to visit me at the hospital in February (was that just in February?!). Yes, I brought photo booth props to my surgery and tried to snap goofy photos of everyone that came-except that I forgot most of the time-so these ladies are one of the ones I actually remembered!

Anyways, life is busy again-March was my month “off” to recover. It’s not March anymore. One of the things I have been busiest with is this new job I took on: Director of Classical Conversations in Monument. Classical Conversations (CC) is a community of homeschoolers that meet once/week to receive encouragement and support for the school year. We all go through he same curriculum (and when I say “we” I mean our community here as well as all over the world-63,000 students to be exact).
Anyways…there wasn’t a community here in Monument and I felt that Lord leading our family to pursue this path…so what else was I supposed to do but start one here!

Toto-it’s not March anymore.

I flourish when I’m busy…but it’s a delicate balance between the most important people in my life (El Guapo and tres daughters) and tasks that when completed give me instant gratification.

So I posted this photo to remember. It’s a good thing to never forget¬†from whence you’ve come.

Now I must go and finish up testing the girls on how much they know, don’t know, should know, what I should have taught them, what I taught them and they apparently don’t have any recollection of…yes, it’s also that time of year ¬†: )

Bees! (with pictures this time)

El Guapo emailed me the photos from his phone that he took of the bees and their hive. For the original post about the bees click here.
In the meantime he had to go in and fix something on the hive. He chose the wrong time of day (the hottest) and the wrong kind of protection (a queen sized sheet). Six stings, a frantic run and a pheromone cleanse later he’s doing fine (and so are the bees).

Here they are all clumped together-busy making the comb (is this picture sideways/upside down? I can’t tell):

bees

For those of you concerned for the well-being of my husband the bee-keeping suit is on order and he’ll be making any adjustments to the hive in the coolest parts of the day! Sheesh.

Pretty much sums it up. For all of us!

Let me briefly (that’s a lie. this is not brief. i am not brief. it will more than likely never be brief) explain.
I’ve become somewhat of a, well, anti-establishment-alist. That’s fun to say! I realize it isn’t a word, by the way, in case you were worried that a woman who thinks it is a word is home schooling her children and must be destroying them: “Since she thinks that’s a word what else is she teaching her children?!” they might say. (aren’t you glad I let you in on my mind every once in a while ; )

Anyways-it’s that year where two of my three children must take the dreaded standardized test. It’s the law here in Colorado-well, the test or an evaluation from a licensed, mastered Colorado teacher that states that they are seeing improvement in the student. It’s not entirely that simple but that’s the two choices we have, in a nut shell. I think the girls need to learn how to take tests and since I don’t really think they actually show how much they know we don’t do them much in our curriculum (remember the “anti-establishment-alist mentioned above?)…so I bought this book you see in the picture. I bought them thinking they would be a perfect thing for the girls to do while I recovered from surgery…except that there is tons of math concepts they hadn’t learned yet (and I’d completely forgotten about) so I had to pull out the “algebra for dummies” book and text my mom geometry questions the entire time.

Also-my mom spent an insane amount of time working with the girls (for that, mom, you will have many, many jewels in your crown in heaven and more gray hairs here on earth : ) THANK YOU!!)

From the photo I think it’s plain to see how one child feels about tests. I think I’d use the same adjective to describe working through the book with her, but I would spell it correctly when I’d use it. Just saying.

So-three cheers for standardized testing…and it’s quiet….was that a pin I heard, dropping to the ground?

But my tulips are trying to make an appearance! And we ate outside for lunch and dinner tonight!!

A farm update coming soon!

The results are in!

Dancing (well, I am mentally dancing-everybody else is physically dancing) for joy here! The tests came back negative!! That means NO cancer! And to quote Dr. Vogel: “It was damn close”. He said that this “thing” was just waiting to make cancer cells and we caught it just in time!! Praise God!!! There was carcinoma in “site 2” which I don’t completely understand yet (I have a follow-up appt. in a couple of weeks) but all of the 19 samples of lymph-nodes he took came back negative.

Just look what those prayers of ours have done!!

Now for a continued recovery-with a lightened heart!

Thank you for joining with me in this journey!

Let's Go PoGo

Guess who got Pogo Sticks for Christmas? No, not the grown-ups, silly! The 42″ of snow outside our front door is making it a bit tricky to keep it up-but just wait until spring!

Okay, it’s not 42″…but it is about 13″! And more to come this next week.

Thank you thank you thank you for all of your wonderful thoughts on “The Speed of Life” posts. I promised a Part 3. I don’t think that’s happening. I suppose that’s apropos, huh?

Also-I can’t leave you without acknowledging my blog-quietness. Life has gotten the best of us. I’ll explain later-just know that the farm keeps farming as we all go about our lives! Having a horse is really nice, too. He’s fun to talk to on stressful days : )

GO BRONCOS!! Although by the time you’re reading this we’ve probably already won!

sally's_text

This photo is from Sally’s post about her last tea-I’m so famous ; )

Something hugely fantastic about our move is that we moved about five (5!) miles from Sally Clarkson. For those of you who don’t know who this is, do yourself a huge favor and buy her newest book Desperate. Also, you can click here.

The Lord has used her to keep me going when times are really tough (like now-when I am ready to kick out the children and subdue this house as my own-I’m’ tired of sharing it with sinful people!!). Oops, sorry for the venting-but it’s true! And Sally offers such refreshment, hope, encouragement…I told her she is like Jillian Michaels for moms…as if she’s yelling at us while on the treadmill “keep it up! You can do this! I know this is hard now-but think of the results you’ll get!”.

Sally hosts a “tea” (it used to be at her house-now it’s at the big church, New Life. Once a month I get to receive encouragement and be around other moms (some even have chickens, too!). It’s great. I’m bringing cookies tonight.
Chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate coconut??

Have a great day!

Trail Running

I love running on trails. Or at least I thought I did. It sounds so, so…Colorado, doesn’t it? I have done it a few times in the past-mostly in college. There is this fantastic trail just 1 1/2 miles from our house that my librarian friend told me about. She runs. A lot. Her husband just ran the Leadville 100 (that’s 100 as in 100 miles!). He’s 65. Wow. Me? I’d just like to run often enough to keep up with my caloric intake.

Anyways…here’s the view from the trail. I took it with my flip phone-so if it’s pixel-y you now know why. But what in the world? Isn’t that beautiful!!??

Now I must find a way not to get eaten by bears, attacked by coyotes or kidnapped while I’m out there alone. In the dark (sunrise is now at 6:15am-so very sad). I’ve been doing Jiliian Michaels’ “Ripped in 30” in my basement. And by “doing” I mean I woke up yesterday and did it. Once. Farm work is a workout in and of itself! Sheesh.

Anyways. Back to trail running. It’s not as glamorous as I thought it would be. Besides the above mentioned dangers there’s also the constant gravel and rocks that keep making their way into my shoes. I’ll have to work on this for next season. As for now…unless I can find a running buddy that will run with me at 5:45am I’ll just keep getting up and doing Jillian. Or farm work. Or both. Or neither. Darn cookie dough.

Also…CATastrophe part 2 is seriously on it’s way…next. I promise. really. no, really!

Also-if you came to see us and I failed to get a photo of it (ugh, I think that’s everybody else) let’s try it again!! That’s what happens when you no longer have an iphone. You don’t take pictures. sad face.

Happy face!:

Mousing Around

This “back to the land” shenanigans we’ve been up to just got real. Very real.
(a HUGE shout out to the third person in the hazmat suit-Papi-El Guapo’s dad). If it wasn’t for Papi we would be well covered in hantavirus.
